Intergalactic Travel: Tatooine (Star Wars)

Yep, that's right - I've just come back from Luke & Anakin Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine.

Southern Tunisia is the location for some of the sets of the fictional desert planet of Tatooine. We travelled to Tunisia on Boxing Day for a week and visited two key sites from the Star Wars saga, Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata which provides the inside of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's house in Episode IV - A New Hope and the more impressive set of Mos Espa which is featured in Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

Hotel Sidi Driss

Situated in the small town of Matmata, Hotel Sidi Driss is an example of the Berber cave housing synonymous with this area. The inner 'courtyard' area was used for filming.

Mos Espa

Approximately 30 minutes from Tozeur in 4x4 through the desert lies the Mos Espa set from the Phantom Menace. As well as many of the buildings being intact, there are still props like 'moisture vaporators'.

As someone who saw all the original movies at the cinema (making my dad sit in the front row for Episode IV in 1977), I was pretty excited to be able to visit these sites. Highly recommended (if you are a Star Wars nut like me!)

  1. I didn't even know these sights existed...but that is the beauty of traveling. The world is a classroom, after all...
